Folklore: Ancient Resins Tallow Lotion
Nourish dry skin as your ancestors did with animal fats and resins. Beef tallow’s high omega-3 fatty acid profile is similar to the composition of our skin’s sebum, making its nutrients highly bioavailable. We render or tallow in small batches sourced from grass fed animals raised on a local farm in Northeast Michigan. Three ancient resins from around the world are featured for their cosmetic virtues in this lotion: Frankincense, Benzoin and Palo Santo.
Frankincense contains high levels of Boswellic acid which boast antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Native to the Middle East and Africa Frankincense has been used by humans since the dawn of time for its curative properties and intoxicating scent. Use of Frankincense resin has made its way into religious ritual from the ancient Egyptians, to the Abrahamic religions of the Middle east, both in the burning of the resin to use of frankincense infused oils for anointing. Benzoin, the sap collected from trees of the Styrax genus contains antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Used since antiquity, benzoin resin is commonly used in Hindu and Arabic culture to this day and has been documented to have been used in Egypt and Greece for treatment of skin conditions as well as religious ritual. Palo Santo, which translates to “Holy Wood” exudes a resin which possesses strong antibacterial, antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties. Known usage of Palo Santo wood and resins dates back Incan Shamans for spiritual purification.
For the liquid phase of this lotion, we’ve chosen two of our favorite plants, Sweet Fern and Calendula for their soothing properties. Sweet Fern’s strong antiinflammatory properties are thanks to high amounts of Beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humelene in the plant’s chemical composition. Calendula, organically grown on our small herb farm, is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Calendula is widely used in cosmetic products for its soothing properties, reducing redness and irritation and healing wounds thanks to its carotenoid rich composition.
This formula’s scent is derived solely from resins and vanilla bean infused jojoba oil- free of essential oils to pamper those even with sensitivities.
Ingredients: Sweet Fern hydrosol, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Theobroma Cacao butter, Grassfed beef tallow and benzoin resin, jojoba oil and vanilla bean extract, grapeseed oil and frankincense resin, sweet almond oil and palo santo resin, Calendula extract, elderberry extract, benzyl alcohol, salicylic acid, glycerine and sorbic acid.
